Infernos destroy 222 houses in Central and West Darfur

On Friday a large fire broke out in the village of Dur, north of Garsila, in Central Darfur, wounding several people and destroying more than 200 houses. Another fire, also on Friday, in El Salam district, Habila locality, in West Darfur destroyed four residential blocks. A villager from Dur told Radio Dabanga that the fire broke out in the afternoon in one of the houses when children attempted to cook some food. The fire spread very quickly to the neighbouring houses. Several people were injured, two of them seriously. 210 houses were completely destroyed. More than 2,000 people (661 households) were affected. The people are living now in the open without food, water, cover, or medical assistance. The villager appealed to the authorities and local humanitarian organisations to aid the victims “as soon as possible”. People from the nearby market rushed to extinguish the blaze, but it spread quickly and was impossible to control. There is no fire brigade in the area.
