IDPs at Abu Shouk complain of food shortages

Displaced people at Abu Shouk Camp said that their situation has deteriorated. Four thousand five hundred (4500) displaced people from the camp suffer from food shortages since 2003, said sources in the camp. They were dependent on their relatives in the past but the relatives themselves have gone without any food since last March, adding to their suffering greatly, they said, asking student organizations to provide food for the displaced. According to an assessment conducted by the World Food Programme in February 2010, per person daily income for residents of Abu Shouk dropped 61% from November 2009. WFP also found that residents spent 80% more of their expenditures on food compared to November. The camp is situated on the outskirts of El Fasher where food prices have risen sharply.
