Humanitarian organizations: state of emergency for Kassab camp IDPs

International humanitarian organizations and the head of the Kassab IDP camp, Eltaher Ismail, held a meeting yesterday in Kutum town, North Darfur. They announce state of emergency for Kassab camp IDPs. Ismail told Radio Dabanga that during the meeting held in a secondary school in Kutum, international humanitarian organizations said that Kassab and Fatta Barno IDP camps require immediate intervention. He added issues such as health care and nutrition were discussed in the meeting. According to Ismail, representatives of international organizations announced a state of emergency after visiting several IDPs from Kassab camp in different locations yesterday. He said that an organization working in the field of Sanitation & Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) announced they will provide (potable) water and toilet facilities (latrines) as of Tuesday. The UN’s Refugee Agency UNHCR announced it will start transporting on Tuesday plastic sheets, blankets and mosquito nets from El-Fasher and Al-Ubayyid (North Kordofan) to Kutum. In addition, the World Food Program (WFP) announced the delivery of food for the displaced persons within the next two days. According to UNAMID’s website, during the meeting yesterday its Force Commander, Lieutenant General Patrick Nyamvumba, reinforced the mission’s commitment to fully protect civilians at the Kassab camp. He added that “the Mission is not in a position to apprehend or arrest, [they] can only put pressure on the Government and ensure that is done.”
