‘Herders kill local sheikh and cut off his wife’s hands’

Local herders have reportedly killed Ahmed Mohamed Bahr, an elder from the nearby Ardeba camp for internally displaced people in Garsila of Central Darfur. The men shot the sheikh who died of his injuries on the spot. The intruders continued by cutting off the hands of the sheikh’s wife and stabbed another man who was present at the sheikh’s farming plot.According to local witnesses the herders on camels, who have allegedly been armed by the local authorities, were angry because the 60-year old sheikh Ahmed refused the men to enter his plot of cultivated land in Wadi Bera, just two kilometers outside the official camp.After the men left, the wife was immediately taken to the local hospital of Garsila where she received treatment. A number of Ardeba camp residents went to the hospital after hearing the news. The citizens started a protest demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators. It was added that the incident was reported to the police.
