More rainfall in West Darfur caused the destruction of dozens of houses in Armankul camp and Soni on Saturday. The families in the affected houses now have to live out in the open.

A coordinator of the camps for displaced people in Sirba locality appealed to the humanitarian organisations in the area to provide the residents in Armankul with plastic sheets and blankets. A total of 57 houses in the camp were swept away, he said, in addition to 20 houses in Soni village.

The torrential rains also hit the markets of El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, and damaged or destroyed more than 150 shops in Rumlela and Atroun, the camp coordinator reported. The accumulation of dirt in the water drains has caused a lot of water to flood into the markets.

He pointed out that the health workers have not performed their duties by opening these drains and filling the scattered water ponds.

Last week, roads became impassable in West Darfur’s El Geneina. The downpours also destroyed a number of shops in the town on Wednesday night.
