Government does not rule out dividing Abyei

The spokesman of the Sudanese ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador El-Abeed Marawah Ahmed said his government does not rule out dividing the region of Abyei between the Dinka Ngok and the Misseriyah tribes, on Tuesday, 9 October. The announcement was made after the Russian envoy to Sudan, Mikhail Margelov, said in an interview with Russian news agency Novosti that president Bashir agreed to divide the region of Abyei between the Dinka Ngok and the Misseriya tribes, as published on Saturday. Ahmed said the government of Sudan considers this a satisfactory option to solve the issues in the disputed area and to find a formula for peaceful co-existence for all parties. During the interview, Margelov mentioned discussing the Abyei situation with President Bashir on Friday. He added that Bashir disclosed details of the agreements reached by Sudan and South Sudan.
