Gold miners abducted in North Darfur

Militiamen abducted six persons from the gold mining area of Jebel ‘Amer, El Sareif locality in North Darfur on Wednesday and took them to an unknown destination. One of the relatives of the abductees said that militiamen “raided six people inside camp Jebel ‘Amer by force of arms”. The militia might have been after the money that the people, allegedly gold miners, had earned after selling an amount of gold to a trader in Jebel ‘Amer, according to a witness. In January 2013, the Sudanese Ministry of Minerals has confirmed the existence of 4,000 gold mines in this region, which produce 15 tons of gold per year at the rate of 70kg a day.
