Thieves stole an estimated SDG 68,000 ($10,500) from four shops in the grand market in Nyala, capital of South Darfur on Friday night. It is believed that this is the second time the well-organised gang has struck.

Merchants told Radio Dabanga that the gang entered each shop by making a hole in the roof. They then used metal cutting tools to break open the doors.

In 2014, what is believed to be the same criminal network broke into nine shops in the same market and also stole large amounts of money. They were never apprehended.

On Saturday morning, four gunmen driving a Land Cruiser without number plates robbed a merchant in Nyala’s El Naseem district of SDG 35,000 ($5,400).

Witnesses said the gunmen severely beat the merchant before the theft, and fled.

The victim was transferred to Nyala hospital.
