Four North Darfur women flogged for brewing alcohol

On Wednesday, four women from the village of Hashaba in Tawila locality, North Darfur, were each convicted to 40 lashes and a fine for brewing alcohol.
The sentence was carried out immediately in Tabit on Hawa Ibrahim Mousa (60), Zahra Shogara Eisa (55), Zahraa Abakar Yahya (48), and Maryam Hamid Daoud (47).
They must also each pay a fine of SDG100 ($16.50), a resident of Hashaba told Radio Dabanga.
The women were caught selling the alcohol in the evening. “As always, one never knows when the police sweep takes place,” he said.
Asked if many people are detained and convicted for brewing and selling alcohol in the area, the villager explained that “this is a very regular phenomenon. Women in the villages and the camps all over Darfur brew aragi [from dates or guavas, RD] as there are enough customers and not enough decent jobs”.
He added that the people are “usually too embarrassed to report such incidents to the press”.
