Displaced man abducted for ransom in Central Darfur

Militiamen abducted a displaced man in Azum locality, Central Darfur, on Sunday. Speaking to Radio Dabanga, Sheikh Adam Hussein, head of Ronga Tas camp for the displaced in Azum locality, reported that a group of 12 gunmen on motorcycles and horses seized Yagoub Mohamed Abdelrahman at the weekly Miri market, 6 km north of the camp, and took him to an unknown destination. “Later on Sunday, the kidnappers contacted Abdelrahman’s relatives, and demanded SDG150,000 ($26,300) for his release. They said that they would kill him, if the ransom would not be paid.” The camp sheikh said that neither the relatives nor the camp elders are able to raise such an amount. “The only thing we could do is notifying the local authorities and Unamid about the abduction, and now appeal, via Radio Dabanga, to human rights organisations to intervene, and rescue the life of Abdelrahman.” File photo
