Detentions in Sudan amid mass protests
On Friday, members of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) in Khartoum detained Dr Mohamed Naji El Asam, a member of the secretariat of the Sudanese Professionals Association, as well as Saleh Ahmed, secretary-general of El Tawasul party.
In a statement the same day, the Sudanese Professionals Association, which has been a major mover in organising the mass protests that have occurred across Sudan over the past three weeks, said it holds the security apparatus responsible for the safety of Dr El Asam and the safety of all detainees.
Saleh Ahmed, secretary-general of the opposition El Tawasul party was arrested on Friday afternoon after his house in Khartoum was raided.
In Port Sudan, NISS officers launched a large-scale arrest campaign after the demonstrations that began in the city on Thursday and the security forces fired tear gas and batons, activists told Radio Dabanga.
