Detention renewed for party members in West Kordofan

The authorities of West Kordofan State on Sunday renewed the detention of three senior members of the Sudanese Congress Party (SCP) for a period of six months. Abdel Halim Adam and Ali Mahdi El Sanusi, after having been released for some hours on Sunday, were re-detained for six months in El Fula, capital of West Kordofan. Samia Kir Abdallah, SCP’s Secretary-general, released on Thursday, and re-detained on Friday, has been charged with disrupting the public order. Her detention, in En Nahud prison, was also renewed for half a year. Detention for such a long period is legal under the emergency act. Three SCP members are still being held in Bara prison, five student members and El Jareeda journalist Hassan Ishag in the prison of North Kordofan’s capital El Obeid. On Sunday, the wife of SCP president Ibrahim El Sheik, who was detained on 8 June in En Nahud, told Radio Dabanga that his health condition is worsening. “He is suffering from high blood pressure, as he is not allowed to take the prescribed medicines.” The SCP chairman has been charged with undermining the Sudanese Constitution, after he had publicly denounced the widespread attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces on civilians in Darfur and Kordofan. En Nahud University lecturer Separately, the detention of Dr Siddig Nurein, University of El Nahud lecturer and supervisor of the Darfur Students Association at the university, was also renewed for six months. Nurein was taken into custody on 16 January. He had supported Darfuri students’ protests against the refusal of the university’s management to exempt them from paying college fees, as stipulated by the 2011 Doha Document for Peace in Darfur.
