Darfuri university students demand release of detainees from region

The Darfuri student union at Sudanese universities called for the immediate release or trial of detained Darfuri activists. In a statement, the student union described the arrests of activists as a way of targeting the people of Darfur. They alleged at the same time that the arrests indicate a hardline security effort to silence and weaken all hotbeds of awareness and enlightenment, and to repress activists wherever they are.

The Darfuri student union at Sudanese universities called for the immediate release or trial of detained Darfuri activists. In a statement, the student union described the arrests of activists as a way of targeting the people of Darfur. They alleged at the same time that the arrests indicate a hardline security effort to silence and weaken all hotbeds of awareness and enlightenment, and to repress activists wherever they are.The students were referring to the arrest and subsequent disappearance of more than a dozen human rights activists and journalists. The crackdown was partly aimed at Radio Dabanga. The statement called on all people of Darfur and the political forces and civil society organizations to act to pressure for the release of the detainees.
