Darfuri students from Kordofan welcomed in El Fasher

About 320 Darfuri students of the West Kordofan University in En Nahud arrived at El Fasher, North Darfur, on Saturday. They travelled to El Fasher in two lorries in order to meet the head of the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA). The students were welcomed by El Haj Osman Hasabo, head of the North Darfur Student Association. In a press statement, he said that the students were invited to stay at the Dar El Argam Collective until a solution is found, and they will be able to resume their studies at En Nahud University. Early this year, the Darfuri students resigned from the West Kordofan University because of their non-exemption from tuition fees. and the continuous assaults of the Security forces and of fellow students belonging to the National Congress Party. The University’s administration did not respond to their requests for exemption or protection.On 16 January, Dr Siddig Nurein, a lecturer at the university and a supervisor of the Darfur Students Association was detained by security forces. Lack of transport On the other hand, more than 2,000 Darfuri students of El Salam University in Babanusa, West Kordofan, are not able to return to their families because of a lack of transport to Darfur. One of the Darfuri students told Radio Dabanga that they have done their exams last week. After the exams they were unable to travel to their families in Darfur. The train connection was suspended for an unknown period of time. Other means of transportation were recently cancelled because of a lack of fuel in the country. The student stressed that the Darfuri students are now living in an “extremely difficult situation”. Activists among the students have appealed to the authorities of the Darfur states and the DRA to resolve their problems, and help them return to their families as soon as possible.
