Darfur: Four killed in armed attacks on civilians

Various attacks and robberies have caused the death of four people, and many others wounded, in various attacks and armed robberies in Darfur over the weekend.

In Kabkabiya, North Darfur, a displaced person was killed and three others were injured on Friday.

Adam Jumaa told Radio Dabanga that Mohamed Abdelrahman (24), resident of the Mawashi camp for the displaced, was shot dead by four gunmen who tried to steal the vehicle he was in near Kabkabiya town. The robbers told him to hand over the car keys. When he refused, they shot him. Abdelrahman died in Kabkabiya Hospital later that day.

Sortony camp resident Ahmed Mohamed (32) obtained gunshot wounds to his hands after being attacked by armed men on Friday.

Two displaced villagers, Haroun Adam and Abu El Gasim Ishag, were wounded in an armed robbery in the area west of Kabkabiya town on Friday.

On Saturday evening, Abdelrahman Mukhtar and Mohamed Idris were killed by unknown gunmen west of El Fasher, capital of North Darfur, a listener reported to Radio Dabanga.

Five separate incidents took place in Saraf Omra on the weekend. Ishag Ali Omar (25) was shot in the foot by two men in the town on Friday. Suleiman Muhamed (17) was stabbed with a machete on the same day. Rasheed Haroun was stabbed with a knife in a quarrel over money, according to a listener of Radio Dabanga.

On Friday, gunmen hijacked the Land Cruiser of Mousa Mohajer, which was carrying 14 barrels of petrol from Kulbus to Saraf Omra. The following day, Adam Ismail’s Land Cruiser was robbed when he was driving back to Saraf Omra from Kereiker weekly market.

In South Darfur, three displaced men, Khalil Ahmed (22), Adam Ali Ahmed (24), and Adam Abdelrahman (29) were injured in an assault four kilometres from Mershing on Saturday.

One of the victims told Radio Dabanga that three armed men blocked their way in the area of Tegi. They fired repeatedly into the air and severely beat the men. They then held them at gunpoint and forced them to give them the firewood they had collected.

He also said that the Mershing camps for the displaced have recently witnessed a series of attacks by gunmen.

The Darfur Network for Monitoring & Documentation reported an attack by two gunmen wearing Rapid Support Forces (RSF) uniforms and riding on a motorcycle on Saturday. A 75-year-old passenger was injured.

Last Saturday, two gunmen riding on a motorcycle shot secondary school student Nasreldin Haroun (18) in the neck in Zalingei, capital of Central Darfur. The victim was transferred to the Zalingei Teaching Hospital. No further information has been reported to Radio Dabanga.

Over the past month, Radio Dabanga has reported a number of attacks on civilians by armed men in Darfur. “A new wave of attacks on civilians in Darfur since mid-November 2021 highlights the urgent need for the UN to enhance its scrutiny of the restive region of Sudan,” said Human Rights Watch in a statement on December 15.
