Collapse at West Darfur’s new airport

Large parts of El Shaheed Sibeira Airport in West Darfur’s capital El Geneina have collapsed, three weeks after its inauguration. The director of the West Darfur State airports company, Abdel Mahmoud, told the press on Saturday that the damage was caused by a sand storm. “The damage, estimated at more than SDG3 million ($500,000), is limited to the eastern side of the airport”. The construction of the new airport cost $45 million. It was inaugurated by the First Vice President Bakri Hassan Saleh three weeks ago. A listener told Radio Dabanga from El Geneina that the collapse sparked panic among the citizens in the neighbourhoods adjacent to the airport.
