A clash between unknown armed men and government guards caused panic among neighbourhoods in the South Darfur capital of Nyala on Tuesday night.

Multiple witnesses told Radio Dabanga that residents took cover in their homes as heavy gunfire broke out near the residence of the South Darfur Governor. They said the firing was started at about 9 pm by a group on men driving a land Cruiser.

Callers told this station that security guards from the Governor’s residence and troops for the nearby military garrison intervened, took control of the situation and have reportedly arrested one of the attackers.

Official sources, however, are tight-lipped about the incident, and have not released any statement thus far.
