Chinese Ambassador: we will not provide Sudanese with weapons

April 1 - 2011 Khartoum

A Committee of UN experts recommended the continuation of a ban on the entry of arms into Darfur and by extension into Chad. Refugees and IDPs downplayed the impact of the decision and called for an air ban over the region. At the same time they criticized China, accusing it of continuing to arm Khartoum. The Chinese ambassador to Khartoum, Shan Lian denied that his country is providing the government of Sudan with arms for Darfur. The Chinese Ambassador said to Radio Dabanga that his country will adhere to the enforcement of Security Council resolution to not provide the government with weapons. The ambassador emphasized that his country strongly supports the ongoing efforts to bring peace to Darfur.
