Four children and an elderly man have died, and more than 12 others have confirmed infections of an as yet unidentified disease in Saraf Umra locality in North Darfur.

On Tuesday, Sheikh Abdelrazeg Yousif Suleiman, coordinator of the Saraf Umra camps for the displaced, told Radio Dabanga that the symptoms of the disease include swelling of the body and abdomen accompanied by fever, vomiting and coughing.

He added that the disease first appeared at Jayeen Thilo and Subyan Khavo west of Saraf Umra town, and Melessa and Numera villages east of Saraf Umra.

Suleiman said the disease appeared in the first week of September after heavy rains, an accumulation of water, and the spread of mosquitoes.

More than 12 people have been admitted to hospitals in the area, all of whom are in serious condition.
