A young boy has died and ten housing shelters completely destroyed in a fire that broke out in a camp for the displaced in South Darfur on Wednesday.

Witnesses told Radio Dabanga that the fire broke out in Donki Abyed camp near Gereida on Wednesday morning. The cause is as yet unknown. The fire ravaged an entire neighbourhood, and 10-year-old Medhat Yagoub Zakaria died in the blaze.

Callers told this station that bystanders and residents did their best to quench the fire with traditional means such as water and sand, but called on the authorities to provide a fire engine for such emergencies.
