C. Darfur displaced outraged after police releases rapist

Residents of the Garsila camps in Central Darfur have expressed their “outrage” after the military police released an alleged rapist on Tuesday, 25 December. A sheikh of one of the camps told Radio Dabanga that several gunmen tried raping four displaced women on Monday. However, during the attack one of the women managed to grab the gun of one of the attackers and pointed it at their heads.  She then started shouting and received assistance. The reported perpetrator was handed in to the police, but was released one day later. This led an outraged mob of displaced people from three different camps in the neighborhood of Garsila to demonstrate. In order to calm down the protesters, the military intervened and re-arrested the alleged rapist on Wednesday. According to the sheikh, displaced people have become afraid to leave the camps, what prevents them from collecting firewood and water. He also said that men and women fear the group of the alleged rapist will seek revenge against them.
