Authorities arrest drivers for refusing to pay ‘war support’ fee

On Thursday security authorities arrested 11 rickshaw owners in Kutum, North Darfur for refusing to pay a fee to support the war against rebels in the Nuba Mountains. Witnesses told Radio Dabanga that authorities interrogated the 11 men and released them on the same day before ordering them to return today. One witness said the fee collecting committees include local officials, police and security offices. The arrest came after a protest of vehicle owners refusing to pay the fee. They said security also often tries to stop buses moving between El Fasher and Kutum, unless drivers pay 10 Sudanese pounds.
