Al Mahdi: ‘Sudan is ready for change’

The leader of the Umma Party, Sadiq al-Mahdi said the spark of change has now been lit across Sudan. He said the signs of rejection are now wider than those that sparked the Arab spring. Al Mahdi said there are six main fronts of protest, beginning with the fact that they are happening in more than one area of the country. Secondly, he stated the Revolutionary Front is preparing to overthrow the regime by force. Civil opposition and various union actions are also taking place. He said ‘there is a protest movement happening within the ruling National Congress Party itself.’ ‘The unrest within the armed forces and defections is a fourth indicator’, and finally stated Al Mahdi, ‘the fact that there are International Criminal Court warrants issued to Sudanese government officials for crimes committed in Darfur.’ The Umma Party leader proposed ‘the formation of a broad front with a clear mandate to establish a new system, with the opposition following the lead of peaceful civil disobedience and protest.’
