About 1,700 Jebel Marra newly displaced arrive at North Darfur camp

The Zamzam camp for the displaced in North Darfur received about 1,700 newly displaced on Wednesday. The people had fled the fighting and bombardments during the last week in East Jebel Marra. The Humanitarian Aid Commissioner in North Darfur is concerned about conflicting figures of the numbers of displaced, and the humanitarian aid and food available. An activist from Zamzam camp reported to Radio Dabanga the newcomers are in dire humanitarian and health conditions. “Most of them are children, women and the elderly. They have been sleeping in the open, without water, food, or shelter”. He urged humanitarian organisations to accelerate the provision of food and shelter. The Humanitarian Aid Commissioner in North Darfur, Suleiman Marhab, stated that “the numbers of those displaced by the recent events in North Darfur until Wednesday morning” have reached 54,708 in Saraf Omra locality, 16,700 in Alliet, 8,280 in Haskanita, and 10,000 in El Taweisha.Ghubaysh locality in West Kordofan hosts 2,820 and Fassi in Central Darfur about 18,000 North Darfuris During a joint meeting with the Parliament’s Social Affairs Committee on Wednesday, the Commissioner announced that the humanitarian aid and food available will cover only two months.
