97,000 Darfur displaced suffer poor health, environmental conditions

The more than 97,000 residents of the Utash camp for the displaced in the locality of Nyala, South Darfur, have complained of deteriorating health and environmental conditions. A representative of Utash camp explained to Radio Dabanga that the camp is “densely populated with 97,000 registered souls, not counting the newly displaced from the area south of Nyala, who arrived two months ago because of clashes.” He also noted that diarrhoea, fever, and malaria are rampant in the camp due to the deterioration of the environment. “We suffer from a dire shortage of adequate toilets to accommodate all the people.” “There are only three clinics in the camp which daily receive a limited numbers of patients without providing any medicines other than some pills.” File photo Related: Plans to close Nyala camps and house South Darfur displaced in ‘model villages’ (5 November 2013)
