29 Darfuri university students arrested

The secretary-general of the Darfur student association said that 29 students were arrested by security forces following the strike they held recently in Bakht Alrida university in Aldoam, White Nile, Radio Dabanga has learned. El-Nazir Ismail Haroun, the secretary-general, also said that 18 students who were striking against the payment of tuition fees got injured following the events of Monday, 1 October. He said several of them were transferred to Khartoum for treatment. Haroun told Radio Dabanga that the detained students were subjected to physical and psychological torture by the security services, which include humiliation, insults and racist slurs. He added that six of the arrested prisoners are being held in security services’ detention, at the office of the Sudanese National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS). Besides, the other 23 students are held in Aldoam police station. In addition, NISS is still searching for another ten students. Torture A student who was released from NISS detention on Monday, described to Radio Dabanga the different types of torture him and the other six prisoners, still in detention, were subjected to. These include insults and humiliation, beating, kicking, spitting in the face, racist scolding and he said they were also threated to be raped. He added that they were not allowed to sleep and must endure long interrogations. The source told Radio Dabanga that the other 23 students were chased and surrounded by security forces on the banks of the White Nile before being taken to the Aldoam police station. Where are the five governments The secretary-general reported that security authorities denied releasing the other six students, despite the university’s director personal request. Haroun asked Radio Dabanga “Where is vice-president al-Hajji Adam? Where is Tijani Sese, head of the regional authorities for Darfur? Where are the five governments of Darfur? Why is nobody interfering to end the suffering of the people of Darfur?” The Nazir announced that Darfuri students at the Bakht Alrida university unanimously decided to resign from the university following the recent events. Sit-in As previously reported, according to the Abuja and Doha agreements, students from Darfur are exempted from paying tuition fees in national universities. However, some universities refuse to enroll new students unless they pay these tariffs. In protest, academics from the Bakht Alrida university organized a sit-in since Saturday, 29 September.
