Citizens complain of rising food prices

Citizens from both West and Central Darfur have complained to Radio Dabanga about the rising prices of consumer goods and food items. In addition, they complained about the scarcity of sugar and fuel in the market. A number of citizens from El-Geneina, Kulbus, Zalingei, Nertete, Garsila, Furbaranga and Umm Dukhon told Radio Dabanga the prices of food commodities have gone up to a level that people are no longer able to afford them. According to the citizens, the price of a sugar sack has reached 410 Sudanese pounds (SDG), a gallon of cooking oil 200 SDG, diesel 120 SDG per gallon and a gallon of gasoline has reached 160 SDG. Trade convoy delayedThe price increases are caused by a delay in arrival of the trade convoy, merchants told Radio Dabanga. They pointed out that both fuel and sugar are scarce, as the convoy has been delayed for two months now. On the other hand, a number of drivers from the trade convoy announced their upcoming arrival to Nyala on Monday October 3. The trade convoy was, allegedly, attacked by the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) on Thursday September 30, on the road between Tabit and Shangil Tobai. Convoy drivers confirmed to Radio Dabanga that RUF seized (30) vehicles, (4) tankers during the attack. In addition, a number of vehicles was burned.
