More than 100 lawyers have signed a petition demanding the release of Darfur lawyer Tasneem Ahmed Taha, who was detained last Tuesday from her office in El Fasher and moved to Khartoum.

In a statement, the lawyers condemn the arrest, arguing that “it is completely contrary to the human rights document stipulated in the Sudanese Constitution and inconsistent with the rights and freedoms enshrined in international human rights and regional charters ratified by Sudan”.

The statement says that Taha has not yet been able to meet with her relatives, while the reasons and place of her detention remain unknown.

The lawyers hold the Presidency of Sudan, the Ministry of Justice, Human Rights Commission, the Ministry of Interior, as well as the Lawyers’ Bar fully responsible for her health and safety.
