Water crisis in South Darfur’s Kalma camp

The newly displaced at Kalma camp in South Darfur are suffering from a lack of potable water. Dr Salih Eisa Mohamed, the Secretary-General of Kalma camp, reported to Radio Dabanga that those recently arrived settled in blocks 1, 5, and 8 of the camp. They have lacked drinking water for a month. Mohamed explained that the new displaced are drinking unsafe water. The organisations working in the camp informed the leaders that as the newcomers arrived late in the year, there is no budget allocated for them. The newly displaced are in need of three wells and four water pumps, the secretary-general said. He appealed to Unicef, OCHA and other organisations working in the field of water to find “effective solutions to the problem”. Food rations Dr Mohamed noted that the names of 6,000 Kalma camp residents, who were registered by the International Organisation for Migration, seem to have disappeared from the lists of the UN World Food Programme. “These people have not received food rations since September last year.” He appealed to the concerned authorities to promptly solve the problem.
