Civilians injured as artillery pounds Darfur’s East Jebel Marra

At least seven civilians were injured in heavy artillery bombardments by Sudanese government forces on an area north of Deribat in East Jebel Marra on Tuesday. Witnesses told Radio Dabanga that the shelling was carried out using mortars and Katyusha rocket launchers. Many civilians fled the area and large areas of farmland and pasture were burned. The military spokesman for the rebel Sudan Liberation Army faction of Abdel Wahid, Mustapha Tambour, confirmed that seven people were injured, and a market and school were burned in addition to the agricultural land. Tambour said that the barrage lasted from 1 pm on Tuesday until noon on Wednesday, but that the area of Krow is now under his faction’s control.
