Zalingei IDPs threaten to end relationship with UN peacekeepers

Displaced people in camps around Zalingei expressed solidarity with the Kalma residents over their opposition to the UN handover of five camp leaders to the displaced. They completely rejected the delivery of the elders of the camp under any conditions. The elders, who sought shelter at the UNAMID police centre in Kalma, are wanted by the government in connection with deadly inter-factional clashes in the camp in late July. UNAMID’s leader has engaged in talks with the Foreign Ministry to hand them over under condition that they won’t face the death penalty. In Zalingei the representatives of the displaced cited the absence of an independent judiciary and justice in the Sudan, calling all the judicial organs part of the country’s security apparatus and non-neutral. The displaced people warned UNAMID that if it hands over the Kalma Five, they will terminate their relationship with the UN – African Union Mission Darfur.
