Young Gimr man calls on Darfur tribes to stop fighting and start talking

A young man from the Gimr tribe in Katayla has called on both Gimr and Beni Halba tribesmen to “transcend their pains, forget their differences, address the common interests between the two tribes and immediately return to the negotiating table.”Speaking to the people of Darfur via Radio Dabanga on Wednesday, he accused the Khartoum government of being the underlying cause and fuelling the tribal conflicts of Darfur.“Tribal war and clashes benefit the National Congress Party (NCP) only,” he asserted. “Prolonging the conflict between tribes in Darfur serves the NCP. However, by returning to the negotiating table, the tribes avoid being victims of the NCP.”Via Radio Dabanga, he posed questions to the people of Darfur: “Just ask yourselves why there are no tribal wars in Khartoum, the North, El Jazeera or the East. Why are tribal wars only found in Darfur? Who is the beneficiary and who is behind all these wars? The answer is: none but the NCP.”Tribal clashes involving the Gimr and Beni Halba in South Darfur have left a total of 94 people dead and another 65 injured since they resumed in March in Katayla locality, a Gimr stronghold. The Gimr accuse government forces at the presidential level of supporting the Beni Halba, who strongly deny the allegations.File photo: Darfur tribesmanRelated:Beni Halba deny government or foreign involvement in South Darfur tribal clashes (31 May 2013)Gimr-Beni Halba clashes leave 94 dead, 6,500 displaced in South Darfur (30 May 2013)
