One of the passengers told Dabanga that the attack took place near a militia toll gate. “We were on our way to Um Lyuna, when these Janjaweed started shooting at us. Maryam Adam Ahmad Badawi (48) from Timana village, died instantly.”

He added that the transport of consumer goods from El Fasher, capital of North Darfur, to Kutum, stopped seven days ago.

“The owners of vans and lorries cannot afford to pay the fees at the about 40 illegal toll gates, set up by militiamen on the road.

“At each gate, a vehicle has to pay the sum of SDG80 ($13.50). In case of a convoy, the fees amount to about SDG1,000 ($167) for one commercial vehicle to be able to reach its destination,” he said.
