White Nile ‘uprising’ prompts arrests of activists

The authorities of White Nile state responded with force to a peaceful protest held by the students of Bakht Elruda Teacher Training Institute. Protesting students called for the downfall of the regime and were joined by angry civilians. The students told Radio Dabanga that the authorities arrested 15 students and eight residents while inflicting injuries on a large number of people. The students also revealed that the police opened heavy fires in the air and used tear gas and batons to disperse the protesters. Protesters had managed to reach to the market of the city and hold a rally, prompting security personnel in civilian clothing to arrest student activists.

The protesters repeated slogans condemning the regime of Omar Elbashir and calling for its downfall. They affirmed that they would continue with the uprising until Bashir leaves power.
