Medical staff in West Darfur organised a protest vigil in front of the state Ministry of Health in El Geneina on Thursday to protest against the appointment of a new director-general of the Ministry. The protestors consider him a symbol of the former regime.

The medics announced a 72-hour strike concerning non-emergency cases in all hospitals in the state starting on Saturday.

A large number of medical and health personnel took part in the vigil. They carried banners calling for an immediate response to their demands.

Memorandum

The West Darfur branch of the Sudan Doctors Central Committee said in a statement on Thursday that the Health and Medical Staff Coordination Committee submitted a memorandum to the state governor, demanding that the decision to appoint a new director-general will be cancelled, and that the former director-general can run the Ministry until a civil government has been formed.

As the governor did not take their demands seriously, the Coordination Committee will take “further steps to achieve the objectives of the revolution”.
