West Darfur displaced boycott elections registration

The internally displaced people living in the camps in West Darfur’s Sirba locality have boycotted the registrations for Sudan’s national elections. They were offered food and security in exchange for the registrations, according to a coordinator. The camp coordinator of the camps told Radio Dabanga that the state authorities had asked the displaced people to join the registration process for the elections, planned to be run in April, in exchange for the provision of food and security within their camps. “They refused to do so because they lack trust in the local authorities,” the coordinator explained. “We told them ‘If you don’t carry out our demands by providing security, expelling the militias, collecting their weapons, and providing health care and food for the displaced people, we will not carry out your demands’,” he added. Sudan’s security apparatus arrested five displaced people in Sirba camp, West Darfur, at the beginning of this month. The displaced were not even told what they were charged with,” the spokesman said at the time.
