The US State Department on Friday retained Sudan on the annual list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism.Syria, Iran and Cuba were the other countries who also maintained their spot on the renewed list.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton alleged that these nations have been awarded this status since they had ‘repeatedly provided support for acts of international terrorism,’ according to AFP news agency.

Sudan was labeled a state sponsor of terror in 1993, for allegedly sheltering Al-Qaeda. The State Department said in its statement that the government had been a global partner in combating terrorism.

However, it was the government’s inability to identify and capture the terror elements which caused the country to stay on the list.
