UNSC expands peacekeepers’ mandate in Abyei

The United Nations Security Council has expanded the framework of the peacekeepers’ mandate in the disputed area of Abyei, between Sudan and South Sudan. This is to help both parties to abide by implementation of the disarmament of the region. The UNSC decided to support the security force in their activities assisting control of the shared border, conducting audits and monitoring the situation as well as coordinating communication for reporting. On Wednesday Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed deep concern to the UNSC over the lack of progress on outstanding issues between the North and South, and on the fighting in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile State. Ban Ki-moon described the security situation in Abyei as worrying. Seasonal Misseriya migration to the south across the region was at risk due to the continued presence of armed forces at the border. The Misseriya would also be crossing an international border said the Secretry-General’s report.
