University suspends classes indefinitely following death of Darfuri student

The Council of Deans of the University of Khartoum has suspended classes at the university indefinitely.The decision was taken after the Council of Deans reviewed the incidents at the university on Tuesday afternoon. A statement issued by the Council explained that student Ali Abakar Musa Idris, third-year student at the Faculty of Economic and Social Studies died of bullet wounds near the office of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts. Students Najla El Tayeb and Mohamed Ishag Abdallah were injured during the students’ protest against the violence in Darfur. The University of Khartoum’s Council of Deans held a meeting on Tuesday evening. It concluded with the Council’s “condemnation of all forms of violence and its absolute rejection to the introduction and use of weapons inside the university”; the decision to form “a committee of university lecturers to investigate the incidents”, and to suspend the classes at the university for an indefinite period of time “to protect lives and properties”.
