University of Khartoum demands release of Dr Mudawi Ibrahim
The Council of Deans of the University of Khartoum’s Faculty of Engineering has demanded the release of Dr Mudawi Ibrahim earlier this week.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Council reported that representatives of the Faculty of Engineering have held a meeting with the Vice-President of Sudan, in which they demanded Ibrahim’s release.
Dr Mudawi Ibrahim, a well-know human rights defender and professor of engineering, was detained by agents of the National intelligence and Security Service (NISS), together with his driver, Adam El Sheikh, from the campus on 7 December. The accountant of Dr Ibrahim’s Lamda Engineering Company, Nora Obeid, was detained on 13 December, reportedly after she updated her Facebook status with #FreeAdamElSheikh.
The Council also referred to a failed attempt of the chancellor of the University to visit Dr Ibrahim in detention.
The Council further pointed to the importance of Dr Ibrahim for the Faculty and his teaching at the Mechanical Engineering Department.
“In addition, Dr Ibrahim has accommodated large numbers of students at his summer training courses. Furthermore, he implemented a various engineering projects, and supported the import and installation of equipment for the Faculty of Engineering,” the statement reads.
