UNICEF tents are currently being sold in large numbers in Darfur’s markets while refugees complain about the lack of shelter in the camps, especially since the beginning of the rainy season. Kalma camp’s (South-Darfur) Sheikh stated that the tents were being sold for 50 to 70 pounds (about 25US$), and called for UNICEF to investigate on the matter. It remains unclear how such a large number of tents managed to reach the markets while the camps are unable to provide their displaced population with proper protection from the heavy rainfalls.

Several traders from Nyala market confirmed these facts, adding that the price per tent could rise up to 90 Sudanese Pounds (about 33 US$), while Geneina’s camp refugees have to face the same issues as in the rest of the region. Radio Dabanga unsuccessfully tried to contact the UNICEF officials in Khatoum.
