UNHCR reveals significant reduction in resources allocated to Chad

Aminata Guey, representative of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), said that “the children of Sudanese refugees do not have access to their birth certificates, while children from the Central African Republic have managed to obtain birth certificates”. She added that “these children did not choose to be born in that country”. Guey stated in an interview with Integrated Regional Information Network (IRIN) that not being able to obtain a birth certificates also means these children will not be able to register or participate in exams. Upon returning to their home country, they cannot identify themselves. She also revealed a significant reduction in resources allocated to Chad by UNHCR for this year. It will possibly reduce more in 2013. She added that “when the emergency response plan for the coast crisis was prepared, the Sudanese refugees in eastern Chad were not included. This is because of the presence of UNHCR in the area”. Guey pointed out the need for a coordinated response to the crisis which should not exclude the Sudanese refugees.
