A South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldier was killed and another was badly injured when their unit was ambushed in Darfur today.

SANDF spokesman Brig. Gen. Xolani Mabanga confirmed the incident on the South African Radio. The troops are part of the joint UN-AU peacekeeping Mission in Darfur (Unamid).

“At this stage we are not in a position to release the personal details of the soldier in question. I can only confirm that one of our troops was killed when they were ambushed,” Mabanga stated.

“Another soldier was wounded badly and is currently receiving medical care in Darfur,” he said, unable to be drawn on when he would be evacuated.
