UNAMID confirms death of 4 peacekeepers

The United Nations – African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) officially confirmed the death of four peacekeepers and the injuring of a fifth in Mukjar, Central Darfur, on Thursday, 20 December.
Aisha Elbasri, spokesperson of the Mission, told Radio Dabanga on Friday that UNAMID lost four peacekeepers and that a fifth was wounded.  She added that the ‘tragic incident’ took place at the Mission’s regional headquarters in Mukjar and that the shots were fired by one of the peacekeepers.
The spokeswoman said the Mission is currently investigating the circumstances under which the ‘unfortunate’ incident took place.
