UNAMID Chief continues to seek release of detained staff

Following the over 2-months-long detention of two UNAMID national staff members, Idris Abdelrahman and Hawa Abdalla, the UNAMID senior leadership continues to urge the local authorities for their immediate liberation. “We will do everything to ensure their release,” stressed Ibrahim Gambari, head of UNAMID’s Darfur Mission. On the 25th of May, access was granted to UNAMID and Idris’ family in Nyala, South Darfur, where he was reported to be well. JSR (Joint-Representative of the African Union) Gambari and Under-Secretary General for Field Support Susanna Malcorra met with Ms. Hawa on June 29th in Khartoum where she is currently being held. She is reported to be well and denies all charges pressed against her. Mr. Gambari has been in contact with her family, and assured them that the Mission will continue its efforts to obtain her release from the authorities.
