Unamid has expressed “deep concern” and called for ‘the utmost restraint” over the recent outbreak of violence in East Darfur which on 18 April in Ed Daein culminated in an attack on the residence of the Governor (Wali).

In a press statement today, Unamid “calls on all parties involved in these unfortunate events to exercise the utmost restraint and refrain from acts that could further aggravate the situation.”

The statement continues that “In line with its mandate, Unamid stands ready to assist civilians in need of protection and support the state authorities in their efforts to bring down tensions through good offices and mediation”.

On Sunday evening, the house of the Governor of East Darfur was torched in an attack by gunmen, which reportedly killed two civilians and four members of the security service. The attack follows the killing of a number of tribesmen in clashes in Yassin locality.

Governor Omer has described the situation in Ed Daein as “being controlled” after the killings, and the burning of his house and one vehicle.

On Monday, Omer said that the reasons for the incident go back to a clash between Rizeigat and a Ma’aliya rescue team, and is unrelated to the bloody clash on Sunday. Omar spoke from El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, where he attended a workshop about disarmament.
