UNAMID boosts support to government farm security committee

The UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) has pledged 245 barrels of fuel to the West Darfur Farm Protection Committee. The peacekeepers on Monday delivered 130 of the barrels as logistical support for the committee’s state-wide “sensitization tour to promotepea ceful dialogue in rural farming communities,” according to a press statement yesterday.The committee’s work was kicked off on 14 September, when the state governor Jaafar Abdelhakim Ishaq chaired a meeting of local authorities. Representatives of UNAMID and the UN Country team were also present. The participants discussed ways to reduce crop destruction, provide security and farm protection, and encourage voluntary return of displaced populations. At another meeting of the Farm Protection committee on 5 October, attendees also included Military Intelligence, Sudanese Police, and representatives of the Farmers Union and Pastoralist Union, according to a previous UNAMID statement.
