UNAMID announces deployment of troops to protect IDPs in Kassab camp

Eltaher Ismail, head of Kassab IDP camp, told Radio Dabanga that Hassan Jibril, ambassador and deputy head of UNAMID, attended a meeting yesterday with Kassab IDP camp sheikhs and representatives in Kutum. The meeting was organized to discuss the establishment of stations, gates and watchtowers inside Kassab IDP camp.Jibril declared his commitment to the deployment of Nepalese and Indonesian forces, authorized to use force for the protection of IDPs in the event of any attack. Ismail said that Kassab IDP camp sheikhs and representatives confirmed to UNAMID they will not return to the camp until the implementation of the commitments and obligations made. He revealed that they visited Kassab camp with a UNAMID delegation yesterday to determine the set-up of stations and gates. He added that Kassab camp representatives specifically asked for the establishment of stations and gates on the west and east side of the camp. Ismail confirmed that UNAMID troops were seen patrolling the camp yesterday. Eltaher Ismail confirmed that another meeting will be held on Monday with all international and humanitarian organizations present in North Darfur, including Arusha, World Food Program (WFP) and UNICEF.During the meeting they will discuss how to provide aid Kassab and Fatta Barno camps. The location of distribution point will be determined as well. In addition, rehabilitation and provision of shelter for the internally displaced will be discussed. He describes the current living conditions as deteriorating and tragic, especially for children and the elderly.
