Unamid Acting Head discusses Darfur with Qatari Deputy PM

The African Union-United Nations Acting Joint Special Representative (JSR) and Joint Chief Mediator ad interim for Darfur, Abiodun Bashua, held a meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) of Qatar, Ahmed bin Abdullah Al-Mahmoud, in Doha on Monday. In a press release on Monday, Unamid reported that during the meeting, the Acting JSR briefed the Deputy PM on the status of implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur, the overall security situation in Darfur, as well as on the ongoing efforts to facilitate negotiations between the Government of Sudan and the Darfur armed movements. “The Deputy PM reiterated Qatar’s and his personal commitments and engagement on Darfur and renewed his pledge that Qatar will continue to support all efforts for peace, stability and development in Darfur,” the statement says. As part of the outcome of the visit, the Deputy PM authorised the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the State of Qatar and the United Nations Development Programme for the commencement of the Darfur Internal Dialogue and Consultations. The MoU was signed by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, Ali Al Za’tari, who accompanied Bashua to Doha. The African Union-United Nations Acting Joint Special Representative (JSR) and Joint Chief Mediator ad interim for Darfur, Abiodun Bashua, held a meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) of Qatar, Ahmed bin Abdullah Al-Mahmoud, in Doha on Monday.
