Ibrahim Gambari, the head of the UNAMID peacekeepers in Darfur, said that residents of rural areas in Darfur use between eight to twelve liters of water every day for household chores and for sustenance, less than the quantity used by an average American or European citizen for brushing their teeth in the morning. In an article written on the occasion of the International Conference for Water, which started yesterday in Khartoum with the participation of two hundred experts, Gambari affirmed that despite Darfur having underground water reservoirs, some areas suffer from lack of water resources, stating that some of the camps for displaced people that shelter thousands are starting to run out of water.

Gambari advocated building a system to administrate the water resources for all the communities in Darfur. The conference is appealing for donations of one billion dollars for nearly 65 inter-connected projects to help in building peace in Darfur.
